Objective:
Reaction time variability (RTV) has been estimated using Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and diffusion model (DM) indices. Rarely have studies examined interrelationships among these performance indices in childhood, and the use of reaction time (RT) computational models has been slow to take hold in the developmental psychopathology literature. Here, we extend prior work in adults by examining the interrelationships among different model parameters in the ABCD sample and demonstrate how computational models of RT can clarify mechanisms of time-on-task effects and sex differences in RTs.
Method:This study utilized trial-level data from the stop signal task from 8916 children (9–10 years old) to examine Gaussian, ex-Gaussian, and DM indicators of RTV. In addition to describing RTV patterns, we examined interrelations among these indicators, temporal patterns, and sex differences.
Results:There was no one-to-one correspondence between DM and ex-Gaussian parameters. Nonetheless, drift rate was most strongly associated with standard deviation of RT and tau, while nondecisional processes were most strongly associated with RT, mu, and sigma. Performance worsened across time with changes driven primarily by decreasing drift rate. Boys were faster and less variable than girls, likely attributable to girls’ wide boundary separation.
Conclusions:Intercorrelations among model parameters are similar in children as has been observed in adults. Computational approaches play a crucial role in understanding performance changes over time and can also clarify mechanisms of group differences. For example, standard RT models may incorrectly suggest slowed processing speed in girls that is actually attributable to other factors.

The importance of parasites as a selective force in host evolution is a topic of current interest. However, short-term ecological studies of host–parasite systems, on which such studies are usually based, provide only snap-shots of what may be dynamic systems. We report here on four surveys, carried out over a period of 12 years, of helminths of spiny mice (Acomys dimidiatus), the numerically dominant rodents inhabiting dry montane wadis in the Sinai Peninsula. With host age (age-dependent effects on prevalence and abundance were prominent) and sex (female bias in abundance in helminth diversity and in several taxa including Cestoda) taken into consideration, we focus on the relative importance of temporal and spatial effects on helminth infracommunities. We show that site of capture is the major determinant of prevalence and abundance of species (and higher taxa) contributing to helminth community structure, the only exceptions being Streptopharaus spp. and Dentostomella kuntzi. We provide evidence that most (notably the Spiruroidea, Protospirura muricola, Mastophorus muris and Gongylonema aegypti, but with exceptions among the Oxyuroidae, e.g. Syphacia minuta), show elements of temporal-site stability, with a rank order of measures among sites remaining similar over successive surveys. Hence, there are some elements of predictability in these systems.

Stars consume hydrogen in their interiors but, generally speaking, their surfaces continue to contain some 70% hydrogen (by mass) throughout their lives. Nevertheless, many types of star can be found with hydrogen-deficient surfaces, in some cases with as little as one hydrogen atom in 10 000. Amongst these, the luminous B- and A-type extreme helium stars are genuinely rare; only ~15 are known within a very substantial volume of the Galaxy.
Evidence from surface composition suggests a connection to the cooler R CrB variables and some of the hotter helium-rich subdwarf O stars. Arguments currently favour an origin in the merger of two white dwarfs; thus there are also connections with AM CVn variables and Type Ia supernovae. Pulsations in many extreme helium stars provide an opportune window into their interiors. These pulsations have unusual properties, some being “strange” modes, and others being driven by Z-bump opacities. They have the potential to deliver distance-independent masses and to provide a unique view of pulsation physics.
We review the evolutionary origin and pulsations of these stars, and introduce recent progress and continuing challenges.

As research on variable stars continues at an ever growing pace, this report can only give a selection of research highlights from the past three years, with a rigorously abbreviated bibliography. The past triennium has been dominated by results of the CoRoT (Astronomy & Astrophysics 2009) and Kepler (Gilliland et al. 2010) space missions, stemming from their unprecedented photometric accuracies and large time bases.

This research focuses on the design and experimental characterization of two types of MEMS asymmetrical electrothermal microactuators. Both microactuator design variants use resistive (Joule) heating to generate thermal expansion and movement. Deflection and force measurements of both microactuators as a function of applied electrical power are presented. Also described is the practical integration of the electrothermal microactuators in a monolithic microengine that is capable of rotating a set of gears.

The star BI Lyn = PG 0900+400 was previously classified as an evolved binary system containing either a hot subdwarf or white dwarf and a thick accretion disk. We have analyzed new intermediate dispersion spectra and demonstrated that both views are wrong. BI Lyn is a highly-evolved system containing a luminous low-mass helium star and a rapidly rotating G-type giant. It may be closely related to the evolved sdO+G binary HD 128220.

V652 Herculis is a pulsating B star with a mass of about 0.6 M⊙ and a luminosity of some 1000 L⊙. Its uniqueness is defined by a surface which is predominantly (99%) CNO-processed helium. Precise measurements of its pulsation properties have provided direct tests for stellar pulsation and evolution models. Simulations of the merger of two helium white dwarfs are very successful in explaining its origin.

A star is exotic because, in some way, it extends our knowledge of how stars behave. As we make new observations we discover new phenomena that we do not understand. As we approach an understanding, those phenomena seem less exotic. That is nature. IAU Colloquium 187 set out to discover how far our knowledge of stars now reaches. This is a personal commentary on the proceedings.

FG Sagittae has evolved from a hot central star of a planetary nebula to an K-type supergiant within approximately the last 100 years. The generally accepted interpretation for this redward evolution is that of a late thermal pulse during the planetary nebula stage, wherein helium burning at the surface of the electron-degenerate carbon-oxygen core is reignited. As the star expands in response to the energy released by helium burning, envelope convection digs deeper and deeper until nuclearly processed material may get dredged-up to the stellar surface. Analysing the spectra as FG Sge is evolving would then give unique information about the temporal development of mixing processes occurring inside the star that are otherwise impossible to obtain. The existing abundance analyses do not give, however, a consistent picture. Especially the question about FG Sge’s hydrogen abundance is still unsettled. We present a critical assessment of all the existing data, trying to find a self-consistent picture of the evolution of FG Sge, based on the latest evolutionary models.

A new polysilicon surface micromachining technique for fabricating and assembling three- dimensional structures has been developed. Single-layer polysilicon elements and laminated polysilicon panels incorporating trapped-glass reinforcement ribs have been successfully fabri- cated on a silicon substrate with robust and continuous hinges that facilitate out-of-plane rotation and assembly. To realize a stable three-dimensional structure, one of the device's elevatable panel components is terminated with an array of open windows, and the mating rotatable element has a matched set of protruding arrowheads/microrivets with flexible barbs that readily flex to facilitate their joining and assembly. Because the arrowhead/microrivet barb tip-to-barb tip sepa- ration is larger than the opening in the mating window, the barbs flex inward as they pass through the open window and then expand to their original shape upon exiting the window, re- sulting in a permanently latched joint and a three-dimensional structure. Three novel arrow- head/microrivet designs have been micromachined to facilitate the latching process, including a simple arrowhead, a high-aspect ratio arrowhead, and a rivet-like structure with a hemispherical shaped cap and a flexible split shank.

Radial and nonradial pulsations are excited in low-mass helium stars with effective temperatures between 7000 and 35000 K. In the case of the most luminous stars, these are driven by strange-mode instabilities (Saio & Jeffery 1988). Less luminous helium stars are mostly non-variable, except around 25000 K. V652Her is the prototype radially pulsating helium star, with Teff ~ 25000 K and a pulsation period of 0ḍ08 (Hill et al. 1981). The pulsation was only understood to be driven by the K-mechanism with the introduction of Z-bump opacity (Saio 1993).
The importance of Z-bump instability in low-mass helium stars has been investigated further through a series of pulsation models (Jeffery & Saio 1999a). It is shown that Z-bump pulsations can persist to surprisingly high hydrogen abundances in low-mass stars, and may consequently be excited in several helium-rich hot subdwarfs with Teff ~ 25000 K. Within the Z-bump instability region, both radial and nonradial pulsations are excited, and multi-periodic variability is expected.
Pulsation properties are closely linked to the global dimensions of a pulsating star by the period – mean density relation. When spectroscopic measurements are also available, the twin constraints of period and surface gravity can place very tight limits on the stellar radius (Jeffery & Saio 1999b). These are in excellent agreement with independent measurements for V652 Her and place a lower limit on the mass of the recently discovered Z-bump pulsator BXCir (Kilkenny et al. 1999).

Early studies of apsidal motion in binary stars showed a marked discrepancy between observational results and theoretical expectation (Schwarzschild, 1958; Kopal, 1965). Improvements in theory (Petty, 1973; Odell, 1974; Stothers, 1974) have led to much closer agreement. However, recent observational results (Giménez & García-Pelayo, 1982; Monet, 1980) have provided much more data with which to test theoretical results.
